Professor Hans P. Borgman is appointed as professor of business administration and information management at Leiden University, and is a visiting professor at both RSM Erasmus University Rotterdam and at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (U. S.). Previous appointments include the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel (Germany) and both the University of Michigan and Erasmus University, where he also obtained his Ph.D. Professor Borgman's current research interests include IT governance, strategic aspects of internet-enabled business, data warehousing and business intelligence, and the adoption of new technologies in organizations. In addition he is active in consulting, on (supervisory) boards and as a frequent speaker at academic and business conferences and in executive education programs.

Information Technology has fundamentally affected how we work, organize, communicate, learn and play. Yet despite this pervasiveness of IT, the IT departments are under increasing pressure to cut costs, comply with regulations, show return on investment and defend their entire existence in a world of outsourcing and increased expectations. Using evidence and examples based on research across a range of industries including airlines, sporting goods and fashion, some of the underlying principles will be highlighted that show how successful companies are meeting these challenges.
